My Favorite Antique Shopping Tips

Over the past month, I became interested in shopping for antiques while visiting my parents. Here are a few of my favorite antique shopping tips.

Just a little backstory, I have never been one to go antique shopping. I’ve always thought it meant looking through other people’s junk. Somewhere along the line, my style has evolved and that includes loving antiques. Below are a few of my favorite antique shopping tips for your next trip.

Always start with a list of what you are looking for. This way you don’t end up just buying a bunch of items that will just sit around your house. The last thing you want is more junk.

Google the stores you want to visit first and look at the reviews. I found that a lot of the so called antique stores also had more of a boutique feel to them. They also sold merchandise that wouldn’t be considered antique.

Don’t go in with any expectations. Several of the stores I thought would be winners ended up being the ones I liked least. The antique stores I didn’t expect anything out of, ended up being the best ones.

Have a price range you want to spend and stick with this range. You can even ask if they will lower the price for you. A lot of the shops are based off consignment, but sometimes if you pay cash they will take a little off the price.

Think about items you can repurpose or repaint. One of the best buys I had was a $15 wicker mirror that I am going to repaint for London’s bedroom. The mirror is so unique that I couldn’t pass it up. Use your imagination on how you could DIY items you see that may not be exactly what you want, but have that certain something.

Look for unique items that you can’t find at big box retailers that will add charm and character to your home. Think about where you want to put items, for instance do you need something for your bookshelves?

Other tips to keep in mind, bring a large basket or bag to help carry your items. Bring someone with you that also loves to antique. They might spot something you missed plus it’s always better with company.

My last tip is to have fun and enjoy the experience. Then take your items home and get ready to love your new found items.
