How To Simplify Bookshelf Decorating

Decorating bookshelves is like an art form and one most people stress about. It can seem daunting but I actually love the challenge and recently updated our shelves. here’s how to simplify bookshelf decorating.

There are a few steps I always take when styling our bookshelf to try and make the process more simple.

  1. Make a list of what items you want to incorporate on your shelf. I always like to add vases, greenery, different sizes of books, art, baskets, and candles. Once you have your list then put all your items in a pile on the floor in front of you to take inventory of what you have.

2. I always start with the very top shelf and work myself down. Create a focal point of some kind. On this shelf I used a bust to start, added 3 varying sized books, and greenery as the focal point. This is faux greenery from Target but you can use whatever kind you want.

3. Next, incorporate some kind of artwork. I like to find vintage-looking pieces with gold frames but you can use whatever artwork you like. I like to lean the artwork back on the shelf or place it on top of books. Target has some great inexpensive framed artwork that looks great on a shelf.

4. Use varied sizes of books with similar book cover colors. Sometimes I even take the book cover off if the color on the physical book is different. For the PARIS book in this picture, I took the cover off to reveal a gold color. Stack larger books 2-4 high and lean some vertical. For smaller books use bookends.

5. Play around with vases and baskets to add height and draw attention upward. I like to find vases with unique textures. This one here is from Pottery Barn but you could easily find something at a local thrift store.

6. Add the unexpected like an antique mirror. I found this French one while antiquing but it adds some fun to the shelf.

7. After you’ve styled your shelves step back and rework the items and start over if you aren’t happy with something. Bookshelves are like a work of art and you just have to keep tweaking them until they feel right.

8. Don’t let them stress you though, have fun and play around.
