Summer Wardrobe Basics

Summer Wardrobe Basics

L

ast month I wrote about how I edited my closet and also how I was starting to curate my closet. Let me start by discussing my wardrobe philosophy: Buy Less, Choose Well. It’s a quote that I constantly think about in my mind when I want to add something. It’s helping me from buying that impulse item that shows up in my emaiI.

I should also discuss how I am going about adding to my closet from now on. You probably know that I am heavily influenced by all things French and this includes my wardrobe. There’s something about the way the French dress effortlessly that I admire and the fact they always look classic, chic, and put together. I am going to have several posts coming up dedicated to the French wardrobe and how to get the secret look. But today, I am sharing what items are acting as my building blocks to a great classic wardrobe for Summer.

Jeans

This is one of those staple items everyone has in their closet and for good reason. I am a huge fan of straight leg denim and I couldn’t be more happy this style is finally back in a big way. Madewell is my go to for denim and some of my favorite styles are the perfect vintage, they are the perfect pair of high rise plus a tapered leg. I am hoping this style stays around for a while because I will be adding a few more to my collection. You can see my review of the jean here. I also love Mother Denim as well for a more boot cut look.

Tees

Finding a good tee is hard to find these days. One that has good quality, doesn’t shrink, and isn’t see thru. At the beginning of the year I ordered two tees from Amazon the drop that I absolutely love. Unfortunately, these tees go out of stock so quick. Next time they come back in stock I am going to order a few to keep on hand. Another great tee that I’ve found is from Cuyana, not as affordable as the Amazon one but great quality. I used to buy all my tees from Madewell, but I have found over the past years the quality isn’t as great and I was having to replace them too often. I am hoping they can work on this and have some better versions in the future.

White Tops

Last week I shared my favorite white tops that you can read here. There’s nothing I love more than a beautiful white flowy top. You can wear them with everything and the easiest and most classic outfit is a great pair of denim with a beautiful white top. Some of my favorites are this one, this button down,

Dresses

To be hones, I haven’t been much of a dress person in the past and I really don’t know why. However, I find myself gravitating more to neutral dresses this past year. They are so easy to throw on by themselves or with a light jacket or cardigan to dress them up a bit. I have added several to my closet for the Spring/Summer season and will continue to add very neutral ones. A few worth noting are this essential shirt dress, this black cotton one, a good silk dress, and a pretty eyelet dress.

Shorts

Shorts can become tricker the older you get, I am mid 40s but keeping them an appropriate length and they can be just as great. I usually go with a linen short because it seems more classic and a bit dressier to me. Mango and Madewell are usually my go to for shorts and they have some great ones right now. Shorts can easily be paired with a tee or white blouse, sandals or sneakers for a polished clean Summer look. Some of my favorites right now are these side tie linen, these long pleated, and if you’re up for a denim pair I just ordered these and will report back.

Shoes

Of course I have to include a section of shoes and bags because those are the ultimate Summer accessory. I like to keep things pretty simple in the Summer when it comes to shoes. A nice sandal, a great pair ofwhite sneakers, an espadrille, and a heeled sandal of some sort. I’ll link some investment ones as well as some affordable options.

Bags

My favorite category of them all. In the Summer I live for basket bags in all shapes and sizes. I have so many at this point but I continue to add them every year because I use them all season long. And, my belief is that you can never have too many bags. A great basket bag, a belt bag, a small crossbody, and a light colored tote for traveling.
