Shopping in Paris is one of the most memorable parts of any trip, and if you’re visiting from outside the European Union, you may be eligible for a VAT refund on your purchases.
This means you can receive a portion of the tax back on items like clothing, handbags, and other goods you bring home with you.
Here’s exactly how the VAT refund in Paris works, what qualifies, and how to make sure you don’t miss it before you leave.
What Is VAT in France?

- The standard VAT rate is up to 20%
- Prices displayed in stores already include VAT

You can qualify for a VAT refund if you:
- Live outside the European Union
- Spend €100.01 or more in the same store, on the same day

How to Get a VAT Refund in Paris
1. Ask for the VAT Form in Store

Shopping in Paris is an experience in itself; from iconic department stores to smaller boutiques, and even designer handbag shops. Knowing how VAT works makes it even more worthwhile. At checkout, always request the VAT refund form (Detaxe form).
- Some stores will offer it automatically, but many will not and you need to be proactive and ask for the VAT refund.
- You must show your passport (or a photo of it), but don’t count on the retailer accepting just a photo.
- Department stores like Le Bon Marché and Galeries Lafayette often have dedicated VAT refund desks that handle everything for you, and they also require your passport in these locations, a photo will not work.
- You also have 3 days to return and claim your VAT form at Le Bon Marché versus other stores will only allow the form to be filled out the day of purchase.
2. Keep Your Forms Organized
Each purchase will come with:
- A VAT form with a barcode
- An envelope for submission
Keep everything together as you’ll need it at the airport.
3. Validate Your VAT Forms at the Airport
France now uses the DETAXE (PABLO) electronic system, which allows travelers to validate VAT refund forms before departure.
At the airport (such as Charles de Gaulle Airport), you’ll need to complete this step before leaving the country.
Option 1: PABLO Kiosks (Fastest Option)
Most travelers will use the self-service kiosks:
- Scan the barcode on your VAT form
- Follow the prompts on the screen
- If approved, your form is validated instantly
You’ll need:
- Purchased items (in case of inspection)
- Passport
- Boarding pass
- VAT forms
- Receipts
Option 2: Customs Desk
Visit a customs agent if:
- Your form does not have a barcode
- You experience an issue at the kiosk
- Your purchase was made in another EU country
VAT Refund Tips to Know Before You Go
