Layering Necklaces

When it comes to layering necklaces, what exactly are the rules? Honestly, like anything else, I think when you layer your necklaces and jewelry in general it should be what you feel comfortable wearing.

Some choose to wear big statement pieces and some people prefer more delicate chains and pendants. Necklaces and jewelry are very personal statement pieces and you should wear what you feel is best.

There are no specific rules to layering necklaces but there are a few guidelines you can think about the next time you want to put on several necklaces or pieces of jewelry.

How To Layer Necklaces

When layering your necklaces and jewelry there are things you want to consider. What kind of metals are you wanting to wear? What kind of top are you wearing (crewneck vs. v-neck)? Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding how to layer your jewelry.

More Is Less

When you wear one simple piece, like a chunky necklace that becomes the statement piece because that’s all the eye sees. Add one or more necklaces and it becomes more of a story.

I personally, love to wear at least 2 necklaces at a time. I prefer more of a statement piece like the chunky chain worn with a delicate chain and there are times I like to add in a pendant as well, but I prefer not to do more than this.

Layer By Length

You will want to start with a base foundation and that’s usually the shortest necklace you start with. It could be a delicate chain or even more of a statement piece like a chunky chain.

Between the first and second necklace, you can keep about 2 inches in between for each piece for a more delicate look. Or, if you choose you can have the second necklace be a much longer length for more expression.

Layer By Outfit

Consider your outfit when choosing which pieces to layer with. If you’re wearing a v-neck top then think about the placement of the necklaces and where you want the focal point to be.

If you’re wearing a crewneck top maybe go with more of a delicate necklace and wear the necklace either above the neckbone or right at the edge of the crewneck.

For more formal outfits, I would keep the necklaces more on the dainty side if you’re going to layer.

Best Pieces To Layer Necklaces

Using a combination of different lengths and chains to layer your necklaces is a good way to start out. I like to use simple pieces with one piece being the main focal point. Usually, my focal point is where I want to draw the eye.

Where To Buy The Best Layering Necklaces

When it comes to where I buy my jewelry for layering, I tend to stick with brands I know I can count on the quality of the piece.

These days, I prefer to invest more in a great piece of jewelry that I know I will have for years to come vs. something that’s trendy for one season.

I also like to invest in pieces that I can wear with other jewelry I already have and like to wear. I keep my jewelry pretty simple most of the time.
