For many, Paris is the ultimate travel dream, but navigating the city for the first time and knowing the best area to stay in Paris can be overwhelming. From famous landmarks and cultural gems to charming cafés and boutiques, where you stay makes a big difference.

Choosing the right neighborhood can set the tone for your whole trip—ensuring it’s as unforgettable and smooth as you’ve always imagined.

Here’s a guide to help you find the best spots to stay for a first-time Paris experience you’ll never forget.

Best Area To Stay In Paris For First-Time Travelers

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements (districts), each with its own personality and unique flair.

For your first trip to the City of Light, it’s important to consider a few things before choosing where to stay: proximity to major landmarks, ease of transportation, safety, and overall vibe.

While there are plenty of areas to stay across Paris, I have two favorites: the 1st and 6th arrondissement. Both are central, picturesque and offer an authentic Parisian experience, perfect for first-time travelers.

Whether you’re after easy access to the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, or busy Parisian streets filled with art, culture, and good food, these districts will have something for you.

Is Paris Worth Visiting?

Absolutely, yes! Paris is more than just a city; it’s a cultural gem.

From its world-famous architecture and historic sites like the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame, to the timeless beauty of its art and fashion, Paris offers a unique blend of history and modernity.

It’s a city that has inspired artists, poets, and creatives for centuries, and even if you’re not a history buff or a foodie, Paris will leave an impression on you.

So, is Paris worth visiting? Absolutely. And once you experience it, there’s a good chance it won’t be your last trip.

Now let’s get to the part that will make your trip smoother: knowing where to stay in Paris for the first time.

Where To Stay In Paris For The First Time?

When it comes to the best areas to stay in Paris for first-time visitors, the 1st and 6th arrondissements are my top choices for convenience, charm, and an overall memorable experience.

Both offer easy access to Paris’s must-see attractions, great restaurants, and cozy boutique hotels.

The 1st Arrondissement: A Great Location In The Heart Of Paris

The 1st arrondissement is often considered the best place to stay for first-time travelers due to its central location and proximity to many of the city’s iconic landmarks.

Located right in the heart of Paris, this arrondissement is home to the Louvre Museum, the Tuileries Garden, and Rue de Rivoli.

You’ll be within walking distance of major tourist spots, including the Seine River, where you can take leisurely strolls or hop on a boat cruise to see the city from a different perspective.

In terms of transportation, the 1st arrondissement is well-served by metro lines, making it easy to explore the rest of the city.

You’re also close to the Île de la Cité, where you’ll find Notre Dame and a quick metro ride from the Eiffel Tower.

heading to paris for the first time, stay near the Palais Royal.

For travelers who love shopping, Rue de Rivoli and nearby Rue Saint-Honoré offer a mix of high-end boutiques and more affordable finds.

As far as accommodations go, the 1st arrondissement has a wide variety of hotels, from luxury stays to more affordable boutique hotel options.

Many of these hotels offer great views of the Seine River and are just steps away from the city’s best attractions.

If you want to be in the center of it all, Hotel Mansart is one that I recommend. Located near Place Vendôme, this classic Parisian hotel has an elegant charm that makes it feel timeless.

Staying here puts you right by the Louvre and Tuileries Garden, perfect for sightseeing and shopping. It’s cozy, convenient, and just the right blend of luxury and comfort—ideal for first-time visitors wanting to experience Paris at its finest.

The 6th Arrondissement: Stay in the Charming Latin Quarter

If you’re after a mix of elegance and bohemian charm, the 6th arrondissement—home to the famous Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain-des-Prés—is the perfect choice.

This district has long been a hub for artists, writers, and intellectuals. You’ll find streets lined with cafés, art galleries, and beautiful architecture that will give you a true taste of the Parisian lifestyle.

The 6th arrondissement is also home to the Luxembourg Gardens, one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces, where you can picnic or just enjoy a peaceful walk.

This area is also a bit quieter compared to the business of the 1st arrondissement, making it a great option for if you want to stay in a more laid-back part of the city while still being close to major attractions.

Staying in the 6th arrondissement puts you within easy walking distance of the Notre Dame, Rue de Buci, and the Pont Neuf, the oldest standing bridge across the Seine.

Plus, with several metro lines nearby, you can easily explore the rest of Paris. For food lovers, the 6th arrondissement is full of great restaurants and patisseries, as well as some of the best places to grab a café au lait and watch the world go by.

As for hotels, you’ll find everything from luxury accommodations to charming boutique stays. Some hotels even offer views of the Eiffel Tower, so you can wake up to Paris’s most iconic landmark right outside your window.

One of my personal favorites in the 6th arrondissement is Hôtel l’Abbaye. Located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Hôtel l’Abbaye feels like a hidden gem with its peaceful courtyard and cozy, classic Parisian vibe.

Originally a monastery, this boutique hotel is perfect for travelers who want a relaxing retreat after a day of exploring. You’re just steps away from the Luxembourg Gardens and charming cafés that make the 6th arrondissement so special.

It’s the kind of place where you can truly soak in that warm, welcoming Parisian atmosphere.

What To Consider When Choosing Where To Stay In Paris

When deciding between the 1st arrondissement and the 6th arrondissement, think about what you value most for your trip.

If you’re looking for a great location that’s right in the center of it all, with easy access to major attractions, the 1st arrondissement is a fantastic option.

You’ll be within walking distance of many landmarks and have plenty of restaurant and shopping options at your fingertips.

On the other hand, if you prefer a slightly quieter, more intimate experience with a blend of history, culture, and green spaces, the 6th arrondissement might be more your speed.

Both areas are safe, vibrant, and offer plenty to do, so it’s hard to go wrong with either choice.

For more options, the 4th arrondissement (near Notre Dame and Le Marais) and the 7th (home to the Eiffel Tower) are also worth exploring, blending history with culture.

  2. After reading about L’Abbaye in St Germain, I decided that since I was already heading to London from Vancouver BC, long haul always rather tiring, why not continue on to Paris for another visit ? London is a wonderful city , but I have visited often, and my favourite hotel near Russell Square is now too expensive as a destination. This gem of a hotel gives me so much more of an experience. I was on the east side of Les Jardins de Luxembourg last April , so the area near the hotel gives me a different perspective.
I am a fit 74 year old needing to celebrate turning 75 next fall , and after a gruelling divorce and downsizing, I am ready to find more joy again. Travel has been such a delight for me, and going solo has never been daunting. Merci beaucoup !

    1. Bonjour Cath!
I am so happy you’re finding joy through traveling! I truly believe it opens your eyes to so many amazing and beautiful things out there! Good for you for doing it after all you’ve been through. We had several solo ladies join our last fall retreat and they both said it was one of the best things they had ever done, going solo! So bravo to you and here’s to more travel coming your way.

  3. Hi Noelani,
I love reading your newsletters on everything French, great reading and fantastic advice.
I recently stayed in my favourite 6th arrondissement area of St Germain de Pres and wanted to tell you about the most superb boutique hotel I stayed at.
It is La Villa Saint Germain de Pres at 29 Rue Jacob. The staff are fabulous, being very professional, friendly and helpful, especially the Concierge, Clement.
I thought I would tell you about this hotel, so you might consider staying there one time you are in Paris, I stayed in a Junior Suite overlooking Laduree, such temptations outside my window 😂
    Kind Regards,
    Ann (I am from Australia)
