Home » Fashion » Back To Fall- Wardrobe Capsule: the essentials in my opinion

The Fall season starts one of my favorite times of the year for investing in my wardrobe. Since cleaning out my closet, I’ve put together a back to Fall, wardrobe capsule. All the essential items in my opinion for the Fall season.

After I donated about 80-90% of my wardrobe I’ve been making a list of pieces to add back in that can be versatile and mixed from season to season.

I prefer more classic, timeless pieces that will last for years. I don’t mind investing a bit more in a clothing item if it’s one I know I can wear for years.

You can see more about how I edited my closet here and also ways to find your personal style which helps when deciding on how to build a capsule wardrobe.

Here are the essentials for a back to Fall wardrobe capsule.

A Pretty Lace or Silk Blouse

There’s nothing more beautiful and elegant than a lace or silk blouse in my opinion. They are both very easy to wear and transition from season to season. You can pair either one of them with jeans, ballerinas, or loafers. For a dressier look wear them with black pants and pumps.

Sézane always has the most beautiful lace blouses and at this moment I have the Bacall Blouse, on my wishlist for Fall. It’s absolutely gorgeous and will look great dressed up or down and comes in white or black. I have this shorter lace blouse from the Summer that I still plan on wearing with the Will Suede jacket.

If you aren’t a fan of lace then you can opt for a beautiful silk blouse instead. I love the Chloé silk top which is offered in many different colors.

I also own several silk tops from Everlane which always wear well and are a great price point for a silk top. Don’t be intimidated to wear silk, it’s so incredibly beautiful and you will feel just as beautiful when you have it on.

Neutral or Checked Blazer

Blazers are always at the top of my list when it comes to my Fall wardrobe. I put on a blazer and instantly feel more polished and elevated.

This year I plan on investing in this gorgeous camel blazer from Sèzane, which comes in many different colors. I do believe in having as many neutral blazers as possible plus a checkered one as well.

You can easily wear blazers with a basic tee, silk camisole, stripe shirt, or even over a dress. There really are endless ways to wear a blazer and that is why they are a good investment piece.

Everlane also offers a great mix of blazers especially with the oversized blazer in check. It runs large so you might need to size down. J. Crew also does a great job with the Regent blazer, I’ve had this one in black for several years now and always get compliments every time I wear it.

Cardigan

Another good essential to any Fall wardrobe is a great cardigan. One that you can layer with a nice tee or camisole and wear with jeans, pants, or even a skirt.

I prefer a mix of short and long cardigans but am investing this year in a few shorter cardigans with details. I love this Gaspard cardigan from Sézane as well as the Alma cardigan. To me, nobody does cardigans and sweaters like Sézane. The quality is like no other and the detail in each piece is so beautiful and elegant.

White Button Down

Everyone needs a great white button-down in their wardrobe. A white button-down can be worn with anything and goes with everything.

For me, it’s as simple as a pair of lighter jeans, some ballet flats or booties, and a great white button-down. I also like to wear it with a navy blazer come Fall.

I own several white button-down shirts as you can never go wrong with owning a few. I like this one from Madewell, that’s a little oversized but have this one from Sézane on my wishlist as I’ve heard great things. I own the blue and white stripe version of this shirt and it’s very comfortable and well made.

If you would like a bit more of a structured or tailored white top you could go with this tie-neck version (which I happen to think is very chic) or tuxedo look from J.Crew.

Tops

I was going to have a separate section for white tees but I am just going to put a bunch of neutral tops in this category.

A basic neutral top or one with structure is always a great piece to have on hand to layer underneath or to put on with a nice pair of jeans and booties.

This structured top from Cuyana is a favorite right now and would be such a statement piece with black pants or dark denim.

Cuyana is also a favorite place for basic tees. Their tees are made well, not too thin, and last. I’ve had several now for a few years that are still in great condition considering how much I wear them.

Stripes are also considered a great neutral in my book and nobody does a stripe top like Sézane. Quintessential French and also great for wearing with blazers, a trench, or by itself with denim and loafers.

I used to be a fan of Madewell basic tees but the quality has been lacking, in my opinion, the past few years so I no longer buy tees from Madewell.

Trench Coats and Jackets

As soon as the temperatures drop I love bringing back out my favorite trench coat and jackets. A trench coat is a great transition jacket as the temperatures change. Plus, it looks so classic with jeans, a white button-down, and flats.

I’ve had this lady day coat in black for years now and it’s still in amazing condition. It’s very warm and classic looking plus I love the longer length.

This year, I have this camel coat from Sézane on my list but this navy alpaca one is beautiful as well. I love jackets with a belt detail that helps add some elegance to the coat.

When I was in Paris this summer I picked up this suede jacket from Sézane that is so beautiful and well made. It looks amazing with a silk top underneath and jeans.

Jeans

When Fall comes around I can’t wait to wear jeans and especially straight fit or a more wide-leg denim. I am so thankful the skinny jean is no longer the only jean offered.

Madewell jeans are usually my go-to brand and especially with the new perfect vintage denim which has a higher waist and straighter leg.

Dresses

Honestly, I am not a huge dress person for some reason. I have started to wear more over the past year but for whatever reason, I don’t gravitate toward dresses.

The ones I have purchased though have been from Sézane like this Vic Dress, which is very basic but very pretty, especially with the bow detail on the sleeves.

Most of the dresses I prefer come from Sézane and mostly because they are classic ones I can have for years. Not that I am opposed to colorful ones but I go more for neutrals.

This plaid one is great for Fall with some tall boots and also this midi length with ruffles which is perfect for date night or the holidays.

Loafers

Besides ballet flats, my other favorite pair of shoes would be loafers. I love to wear a beautiful loafer with jeans, a blazer, and a nice should bag.

I have this brown pair from Madewell which are very comfortable and was lucky to purchase a beautiful black pair while in Paris this Summer.

This pair from Everlane is also very classic and beautiful in either color offered. You can’t go wrong with a classic and timeless pair of loafers. You will have them for years to come.

Booties

Booties are another investment item during the Fall but a great pair of booties should last you for years. This is another item I feel like I could buy 10 pairs and still want more. I love a good-looking bootie that is also comfortable and the perfect height.

This year I invested in this lower option bootie from Sézane, I have several pairs of shoes from Sézane that I’ve had for years. They are incredibly well made and hold up during the seasons.

I also love their Billie ankle boot with shorter jeans and the classic Jules boot as well.

Last year I invested in this higher pair from Madewell, and so far they’ve been a great addition. Sometimes, depending on the pant or jeans I am wearing I would like more of a bootie with a heel.

I think it’s okay to have multiple pairs of booties for this reason, just invest in ones that will last for years to come and are comfortable to wear for the day.

A Shoulder Bag

Bags are another item that are always on my wishlist. A shoulder bag is practical and versatile for multiple reasons. One is you can go hands-free and you can wear crossbody style if you wish which makes running errands much easier.

I love a beautiful leather shoulder bag in either classic brown or black. However, for Fall a great color would be burgundy like this one from Sézane that is on my birthday wish list.

Sézane offers a handful of gorgeous leather shoulder bags like the Victor Bag and Quilted Victor.

A few other French brands I love for leather bags would be A.P.C. and Polène as well.

  1. I’m a Sezane lover as well. the minute I saw your Paris post in tbd lace blouse, I knew I needed it. It was out of stock, so I signed up for an alert but never received one. When I read this post and saw it again, I clicked on the link and, to my surprise, it was in stock and it’s now on its way to me. Thank you! Thinking about the Bacall too.
