Fall Capsule Wardrobe Pieces 2022

The Fall and autumn season starts one of my favorite times of the year for investing in my wardrobe. Since cleaning out my closet, I’ve continued to put together a fall capsule wardrobe. All the essential items in my opinion for the Fall and autumn season 2022.

After I donated about 80-90% of my wardrobe I’ve been making a list of pieces to add back in that can be versatile and mixed from season to season.

I prefer more classic, timeless pieces that will last for years. I don’t mind investing a bit more in a clothing item if it’s one I know I can wear for years.

Here are the essentials for a Fall capsule wardrobe

1. Blazer

A blazer for fall and autumn 2022 is not only a chic and stylish way to dress for the season but one of my favorite pieces of clothing to wear especially for a fall capsule.

I put on a blazer and instantly feel more polished and elevated.

Blazers have always had this connotation of being just for the workplace but that’s not true at all. There are so many different types of blazers nowadays that you can find one for any occasion, including everyday dressing.

I like to say you can put a blazer outfit together in under 10 seconds, just add your favorite pair of denim, a t-shirt, ballet flats or loafers, and a great handbag.

Choose neutral colors like black, navy, and camel. Or go with a blazer with some texture like plaid or houndstooth.

If you are someone who likes to wear what’s more trendy for the season, you can choose an oversized or menswear-inspired blazer for fall and autumn.

You can easily wear blazers with a basic tee, silk camisole, stripe shirt, or even over a dress. There really are endless ways to wear a blazer and that is why they are a good investment piece for your fall 2022 capsule wardrobe.

Simple yet classic and timeless.

2. Denim

Everyone needs a great pair or two of denim in their closet for fall 2022 and with so many different styles this season it may be hard to choose.

Stick with denim that works for your body type, flatters your silhouette, and hits at the right length.

Just because a pair of denim is trendy doesn’t necessarily mean they are the right fit. I prefer to stick with classic pairs that I’ve been wearing for years.

My favorite brands for denim are MOTHER, AGOLDE, and Madewell. I tend to go with a straight leg, flare, or boot cut because that’s what works best for my body type. I also tend to wear darker shades of denim vs lighter shades for a more slimming effect.

Denim is definitely an area of your wardrobe and capsule you should invest in because a great pair of jeans not only make you look amazing but you will also feel just as amazing.

3. Button Down Top

Everyone needs a great white button-down in their wardrobe. A white button-down can be worn with anything and goes with everything.

For me, it’s as simple as a pair of dark jeans, some ballet flats or booties, and a great white button-down. I also like to wear it with a navy blazer during Fall.

A classic alternative to a white button-down is a striped button-down. You can wear them by yourself, under a sweater, or layered under a blazer. Personally, I don’t think you can ever have too many stripe tops.

4. Cardigan

Nothing is more cozy yet sophisticated for a fall capsule wardrobe than a great-looking cardigan. For days when I want that effortless vibe, yet still want to look put together I reach for a cardigan.

You can opt to wear the cardigan layered with a silk cami or tee or just leave the cardigan and don’t wear anything underneath.

Also, tuck your cardigan in for a polished look or leave it hanging for more of a relaxed look. I personally love more of a shorter cardigan but a longer one looks just as nice.

For fall and winter, I am wearing the Basile Cardigan, the Emile Cardigan (I sized up for a relaxed fit to M), and always the Gaspard Cardigan (I wear a small). From MERSEA, another favorite brand I am wearing the Anywear Cardigan in the midnight and sand color as seen above.

Two other investment cardigans I am also wearing are the Lou Lou Paris and the Gaspard from ba&sh which I purchased in Paris. This cardigan is so incredibly chic and classic looking. It goes great with jeans and trousers, I absolutely love this cardigan.

5. Layering Top

Layering tops are essential for any season but especially in fall when you’re wearing sweaters and jackets.

I use a different range of layering tops to finish off my outfits specifically with blazers and cardigans.

Depending on the weather and the event I am dressing for I will either wear a basic short sleeve t-shirt or even a long sleeve.

For evenings out, I will wear a cami as a layering top and I even consider my favorite striped top as a layering piece as well because I wear it under so many different pieces.

6. Trench and Wool Coats

As soon as the temperatures drop I love bringing back out my favorite trench coat and jackets. A trench coat is a great transition jacket as the temperatures change. Plus, it looks so classic with jeans, a white button-down, and flats.

A classic wool coat can add instant polish to your fall 2022 capsule wardrobe and help to elevate the most basic of outfits. There are so many different options you can go with. Depending on your height you can think about the length of your coat.

If you’re more on the petite side, under 5’4″ you might want to stick with a length above or right below the knee. For taller ladies, opt for a longer length. Although, I always say to wear what makes you comfortable and makes you feel good.

My favorite wool coat is the Johnson coat in navy from Sézane. Navy is such a beautiful, timeless, and elegant-looking color. I sized up in the coat so I can wear it with sweaters and layer underneath. The coat also comes in several other colors but to me, the navy is the most beautiful.

Another beautiful color for fall and even into winter is a camel in all different shades. Finding a camel coat that matches your skin tone can be a bit tricky.

I’ve been looking for a few years now and found this one from Sézane this year, which is exactly what I am looking for. It’s on the longer side but I think it makes the coat look more elegant and a bit more dressy.

When I was in Paris last year, I picked up this suede jacket from Sézane that is so beautiful and well made. It looks amazing with a silk top underneath and jeans.

7. Sweaters

Wouldn’t be fall without wearing a striped top and love this Trudy Jumper from Sézane, also this navy jumper as well as the Jacob Jumper which has a mock turtleneck. I wear this in a medium and have it in black and camel, I love it so much. It’s a turtleneck without having the neck go all the way up which bothers me sometimes.

Other favorite sweaters to wear during fall are from brands like Everlane like this Alpaca Crew, I size down to a small. Another investment brand but definitely worth the price is always MERSEA, I am wearing the Banff Cashmere Crew in medium, and I have the black and winter colors.

Invest in sweaters with quality material and take good care of them and they can last for years.

8. Trousers

Trousers or pants are any clothing piece that is often associated with workplace dressing. However, over the last several years trousers have started to find their place in everyday dressing.

Now you can wear trousers with a button-down, a sweater, or even a t-shirt. One of the more trendy ways to wear trousers this fall and autumn season is with an oversized blazer and sneakers.

Like my denim, I prefer my trousers to be higher-waisted with straighter legs. Some of my favorite brands I found with quality trousers are Reformation, Everlane, Sézane, and Banana Republic.

I have to say that it’s taken me some time to get used to wearing trousers for everyday dressing. I am so used to wearing jeans daily and I often thought of trousers as workplace attire as well, so I never wore them except to work.

I have been appreciating wearing them with sneakers and a sweater this fall as it’s very chic and stylish.

9. Accessories

Handbags are my absolute favorite accessory to discuss and shop for. I don’t necessarily follow the latest handbag trends for fall 2022 or actually any season. I prefer to invest in quality handbags that I can use year after year and purchase handbags that are timeless and chic.

A beautiful leather handbag in a black or dark brown shade for fall 2022 is always a classic way to go. Stick with neutral bags made of leather or suede for the season.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a handbag, just choose one that’s suitable to your daily lifestyle and that you love.

Belts are one of my other favorite accessories to wear and one I think most people forget about. The way I love to wear them most is to belt a jacket around the waist. It’s such a classy and elevated way to wear a belt.

I’ll never forget one year in Paris when I chatted with a beautiful French woman wearing black trousers, a navy sweater, and a skinny black belt around her waist on the sweater. I just remember thinking about how elegant she looked.

10. Shoes

For your fall capsule wardrobe this season, go with boots, loafers, sneakers, and ballet flats.

Normally, I don’t necessarily wear a lot of boots until it’s freezing outside and I don’t want to show my ankles anymore. Until then I am pretty much-wearing loafers or ballet flats and sneakers.

Loafers are such chic and classic shoes for the fall and autumn seasons and never go out of style. They are a closet staple not only for Parisian style but this fall season there are so many different types of loafers you can wear.

If you’re looking for more of an edgy or masculine-looking loafer for fall or autumn, you can go with a loafer with either a tassel, a penny loafer, or even a chunky lug sole loafer like these from Madewell.

Sneakers can obviously be worn year-round and look classic and stylish worn in many different ways. For fall and winter, wear sneakers with trousers and a sweater or jeans and a blazer.

My favorite sneaker types are VEJA, Converse, or Stan Smith.

Hopefully, this has given you some ideas for your own fall capsule wardrobe for 2022. These are all classic, timeless pieces that you can carry over into the next season and wear again next year.
